Macedonia earns moderate to strong ratings in several categories, suggesting a generally solid overall governance and anti-corruption framework. Regulatory and oversight bodies such as the anti-corruption agency, audit institution, and ombudsman enjoy moderate to very strong scores. Robust anti-corruption legislation is in place, while civil society and the media earn strong ratings for their roles as corruption watchdogs. There are important exceptions, however. Professionalism of the civil service and legislative accountability are very weak, with conflicts of interest laws and regulations either non-existent or poorly enforced. Other areas of weakness include ineffective regulations over privatization and poor oversight of political financing.
