Kuwait's media and civil society organizations, while relatively free compared to much of the Middle East, are hindered in their anti-corruption watchdog efforts by the country's lack of a formal access to information regime (a challenge shared by most countries in the Middle East and North Africa). There are absolutely no regulations governing the flow of private money into political campaigns in Kuwait, providing ample opportunity for influence peddling, as we report in our Reporter's Notebook for the country. Nepotism and cronyism continue to plague the civil service, especially in the promotion of civil servants to more senior positions.
